Why Does A Multistage Centrifugal Pump Produce Loud Noise And Significant Vibration When It Is Running?

Dec 10, 2025

During operation, many users encounter problems with noise and vibration in multi-stage centrifugal pumps, which is a headache for them. It is not as simple as a dripping faucet. Noise and vibration often indicate potential faults inside the pump. If not dealt with promptly, they may affect production efficiency and even damage the equipment. So, what causes these "unpredictable" behaviors of multi-stage centrifugal pumps?
Firstly, it could be that the dynamic balance inside the pump has been disrupted. Multi-stage centrifugal pumps have a large number of impellers, and each impeller needs to undergo strict dynamic balance testing to ensure the stability of the center of gravity during rotation. If an impeller is damaged, corroded, or has a manufacturing defect, resulting in an uneven distribution of quality, centrifugal force will be generated during high-speed rotation, causing vibration and noise.
Secondly, the health condition of the bearings directly affects the operation of the pump. The bearings are the key components that support the rotation of the pump shaft. If the bearings experience wear, damage, or poor lubrication, the rotational resistance of the pump shaft will increase, resulting in vibration and noise. Especially at high rotational speeds, bearing problems are more likely to become apparent.
Furthermore, the cavitation phenomenon inside the pump is also a significant factor. Cavitation refers to the phenomenon where, when the pressure in the pump drops to a certain level, bubbles form and then rapidly burst. When these bubbles burst, they generate intense impact forces, causing vibration and noise in the pump body. Cavitation usually occurs when the inlet pressure of the pump is insufficient, the flow rate is too high, or the liquid temperature is too high.
Furthermore, improper matching between the multistage centrifugal pump and the pipeline system can also cause problems. If the outlet pipe of the pump is too thin, there are too many elbows, or there is blockage, it will increase the outlet pressure of the pump, causing the pump's operating condition to deviate from the design point, resulting in vibration and noise.
Finally, improper installation of multi-stage centrifugal pumps can also cause problems. If the pump base is unstable, the connection with the pipeline is not tight, or there is misalignment, additional vibration and noise will occur during operation.
To solve the problems of noise and vibration in multi-stage centrifugal pumps, we need to start from the above several aspects and conduct a thorough investigation. Regularly inspect the conditions of key components such as the impeller and bearings to ensure that the pump's inlet pressure and flow rate meet the requirements. Optimize the design of the pipeline system, standardize the installation of the pump, so as to effectively reduce noise and vibration, extend the service life of the pump, and ensure the stable operation of production.
